There are many ways to spot an online con artist, but here are three of them.

1. Most online con artists bank on the fact that most people are fairly honest and assume others are fairly honest also.

They usually start off, by being overly interested in your finances and your access to additional financial sources. If you aren’t careful they will soon know how much you make, how much child support you receive, your investments; both long term and short term. This is one of the main ways to spot an online con artist.

2. They have small, immediate financial needs. But they quickly assure repayment within a week or two. Doesn’t sound like that big of a risk...right? Not yet...

Before too long, the financial needs grow and reasons become more and more serious.

Stop and think about it: why isn’t there anyone else in their life that can help them? That’s a bright red flag. Why is he throwing himself at the mercy of a virtual stranger? It’s your money...you have the absolute right to ask these questions!

3. At this point, you are beginning to feel an emotional attachment. You are even convinced that you are in a “relationship”. The con artists decides this is the time to play on your emotions and attachment to them. This is THE main way to spot the online con artist.

They casually mention that without your help (financial help of course) they may have to relocate (you can’t have that happen!); they may lose their car (if that happens, how will the two of you ever meet and live happily ever after?) They may even go as far as to say if you don’t help with this months rent, they will have to go back and live with an “ex”.

They don’t love them of course; they just need a place to stay. So, if they end up back in the arms of the “ex”? You have no one to blame but yourself!

Please think each of these tips through...and while online? Keep your guard up...your antennas out...and your wallet closed!
